All About Manual Wheelchairs
Ultra Light Chairs
Ultra Lightweight wheelchairs are a type of manual wheelchairs, which are designed to be as lightweight as possible. There are 2 types of chairs in this category: a rigid or foldable frame.
A rigid frame is the kind that is not foldable and is usually designed for active individuals. Because it is not foldable, it is not recommended for everyone looking for a chair.
A foldable frame is the kind that is suited for the general public. Because it has a foldable frame it can be very portable to take from point A to point B. This type of wheelchair is one of the most popular available because they are usually high end and very comfortable.
This type of chair comes standard with non-removable feet, this means that the chair is designed to be used with the legs or feet at all times.
Designed with feet or legs that are completely removable to be able to get them out of the way. You can get them out of the way for easy transferring of the user. Some people also prefer removable feet to allow them to propel with the use of their feet instead of propelling with the hands pushing the hand rims located on the rear wheels.
Swing Away Footrests
Swinging feet means that they are able to swing towards the outside of the frame. This is similar to the removable footrests as it allows them to move the feet out of the way. This can be used for user transfers from the chair to another surface or to propel with their feet.
Non-removable arms means that they cannot be moved out of the way at any point. This type of arm design allows the chair to have less movable parts, which can translate into a lighter frame weight.
Arms that can be removed completely if they are not being used or in the way of the user’s comfort
Tilting chairs are the kind of device that is made to specifically provide increased adjustability and configurability. The main feature of this mobility device is the frame can be fully tilted backwards to allow the user to be in a more comfortable position than the average chair. Part of the reason why an individual may need this type of device is because they require pressure relief and redistribution of backpressure that is usually most common on the lower back.
This is the most innovative type of chair available today. It is a high-end state of the art device that allows people to be able to go from a seated to a standing position. There are 2 main uses for stand chairs, you can use it as a regular power device to get around, and it comes standard with a joystick for the user. It can also be used as a standing frame to allow the user to have better blood circulation and pressure relief.
Reclining wheelchairs are manual chairs that come standard with an extended headrest, which is designed to be extremely comfortable. The seat width can vary from the lowest possible width being 14” and the widest possible width being 24”.
