It is very easy to spot whether a wheelchair is a transport or manual wheelchair. The easiest way to tell is to look at the rear wheels of the chair, if the wheels are small; it means that the chair is considered a transport chair. If it has large rear wheels just by doing an eye test, it is more than likely a manual wheelchair.

The big difference with the rim and tire sizes means that you can either propel the chair on your own or you must be pushed at all times by an individual. 14” rear wheels are very common when it comes to transport wheelchairs.

Manual wheelchairs usually have a range of 20” to 24” rear wheels. The front wheels of either a transport or manual chair will be very similar in diameter, which means that you wouldn’t be able to tell whether it is either type without checking the rear wheels.

Where is it Commonly Used?

Transport wheelchairs tend to be used in hospitals and elderly care facilities. This is because their main feature of having small wheels and companion handles makes it the ideal wheelchair to be used in these environments.

Some transport chairs allow you to add-on companion brake handles so that the person pushing you can have full control of the braking mechanism without having to bend down to the rear wheels to use it.
