Solutions for Keeping Feet from Sliding Off Wheelchair Footrests

While seated in a manual wheelchair, you may experience a situation where your feet will slide off the footplate for any given reason.

This has to do with the type of movement and angles that you take when you are moving in a wheelchair, this may occur when you are lifting yourself off the wheelchair or when you are adjusting your seating position on a chair.

One situation where this issue would be common is after foot or leg surgery. Your lower limb will more than likely be in a cast or sling, which may prevent you from using your shoe while sitting in a wheelchair. This means that you no longer have the safety of a shoe sole to get a grip when lifting off a wheelchair or adjusting your position.

Cheap and Effective Wheelchair Grip Solutions

3M grip tape is probably the best and cheapest solution when it comes to feet sliding off a wheelchair footrest. This grip tape has a surface that is similar to sand paper, but it holds a stronger grip. The great thing about this tape is that it comes with a ready-to-tape bottom, which means that this could be a permanent upgrade to your footrests.

The footplates will usually come standard with no type of grip, which can be a problem for most users. Some options are available when it comes to purchasing a grip solution for your feet.

There are cheaper solutions than you would think, one of them is placing or gluing a piece of rubber or a similar material to the top of the footplate, which would create a gripped surface so that when you place your feet on there, there is a solid grip between the sole of your shoe and the footplate surface.
