How to Get in a Wheelchair – Getting In and Out of Wheelchairs

To get into a wheelchair, the user must transfer their body to the seat frame of the chair. There are many ways to transfer into a wheelchair seat; the most common is locking the brakes into place, and positioning the chair in a lateral position to your legs. This is the simplest way to enter a wheelchair seat.

There are other methods of transferring into a wheelchair; some of these require the assistance of a caregiver to allow the user to transfer with the help of another person. This is called a 2-person wheelchair transfer, which is used when the patient cannot leave the chair without assistance.
